Weekly Opening Lines – Dec 14th

By

on

Every Saturday morning, I’ll share the first lines (or better yet, the first paragraph or first round idea) of a book I’m currently reading.

Here are the first lines of Yellowface, from R. F. Kuang:

“One. The night I watched Athena Liu die while celebrating her TV deal with Netflix.
Of the bat, for this story to make sense, you should know two things about Athena. First: She has everything. A multi-book deal straight out of college at a major publishing house, an MFA from the one writing workshop everyone has heard of, a resume full of prestigious artist residencies, and a history of awards nominations longer than my grocery list.”

Join me in the trend, grab the nearest book, and share the first lines in the comments with us. Or share the first line of a book you’ve recently reviewed and link to the post!

How are you enjoying Yellowface? It’s not my usual thing, but I found it really compulsive reading.

I think compulsive reading is a good definition for it lol. I loved Babel, but Yellowface is so different that I was suspicious of it. But it is good!

I really like the narrator’s personality, Kuang did a really good job in putting the complexity there and not just make her seem like a villain. I’m rooting for Juniper Song, but… why? 😅
