Books on My Fall 2024 To-Read List (TTT)

I’m participating in my first book meme!

This post is part of the Top Ten Tuesday, hosted by That Artsy Reader Girl. This meme has been around since 2010!

Each week she (with the help of the readers) defines a bookish topic for a top ten list. This week’s topic is Books on My Fall 2024 To-Read List.

Here’s my list:

  • The Mysterious Affair at Styles, by Agatha Christie
    • There couldn’t be a fall list without some murder mystery, right? So of course, the Queen of Crime would be here. This is Agatha Christie’s first book, and it stars the famous detective Hercule Poirot dealing with a poisoning case.

  • Murder on the Orient Express, by Agatha Christie
    • Another classic by the queen. I read this book two decades ago, in Portuguese, and loved it. I’m curious to see if my opinion changed. This story has Hercule Poirot investigating a crime that happened inside a train.

  • The Mystery of Three Quarters, by Sophie Hannah
    • She’s the new holder of the Agatha Christie legacy. I’ve read her two previous books and they’re awesome. In this one, Poirot has to deal with the fact that several people are receiving mysterious letters in his name, accusing them of murder. The truth is… he never sent them!

  • Haven’t They Grown, by Sophie Hannah
    • This is not an Agatha Christie sequence but is one of Sophie Hannah’s other mystery books. It was renamed “Perfect Little Children” for some reason. In this story, a woman stops by the neighbourhood of an old friend. Everything is going well when she realizes that her friend’s children haven’t grown at all. In 12 years!

  • Beatrice and Virgil, by Yann Martel
    • I’m meaning to read more of my favourite Canadian author’s books, so this one is next. This is the story of a donkey named Beatrice, a monkey named Virgil and a man named Henry. I’m excited to see what the author of Life of Pi has in store for us.

  • The Testaments, by Margareth Atwood
    • I’ll be joining the Margareth Atwood Reading Month this year, hosted by Buried in Print. This is the one that has been sitting on my shelf for longest, and although I’m scared of the 415 pages, I’ll try to finish it by the challenge date. This book is a sequence to The Handmaid Tale.

  • The Heart Goes Last, by Margareth Atwood
    • That’s my alternative to the previous book, with “just” 306 pages. This is the story of a couple living in their car and ends up getting involved in a strange project: they agree to move to a new neighbourhood where they’ll need to be in prison for six months out of the year, in exchange for a place to live.

  • Man Tiger, by Eka Kurniawan
    • Back to my Year of Reading Asia, I’m going to dive into Indonesian literature. This is a magical realism book involving a man who holds inside himself a female white tiger.

  • The Girl in the Photograph, by Lygia Fagundes Telles
    • This book is by a famous Brazilian author and tells the story of 3 young women living in Brazil in the 1970s. While they navigate their own desires and traumas, the country lives through a violent period of authoritarianism.

  • The Gift of Rain, by Tan Twan Eng
    • I’ve become a fan of Eng’s work last year and already read 2 of the 3 books he published. This one is his first book and talks about a Chinese-British man who becomes friends with a Japanese diplomat in Malaya.

Ooh yay! Another Malaysian book is getting added to my TBR! I hope you enjoy it when you read it. I also loved Life of Pi and Margaret Atwood’s books but I haven’t read these.

Yeah! This is my first book meme too! Lot’s of Agatha Christie fans. We tend to watch the tv shows on PBS.

I think I watched the episode on The Murder of Roger Ackroyd on PBS, but I confess I didn’t really like the way they adapted it…

I have CURTAIN on my TBR forever! I can’t find it in any bookstores here in Toronto

Welcome to TTT! It’s such a fun meme. I’m glad you’re here 🙂

I have a Christie novel on my list today, too. Funny enough, it’s CURTAIN, the last Poirot book. MURDER ON THE ORIENT EXPRESS is a good one. I hope you enjoy it and all these others.

    Happy TTT!

Luckily, my library has several copies!

The Testaments felt much faster paced than Handmaid’s Tale so don’t let the length put you off.

      Thanks, that’s encouraging! =)

I read some bad critiques, but I think people get high expectations after The Handmaid’s Tale…
